Curly hair differs from straight hair. To get the curls enhanced and defined, specific hair care routines are needed with certain products. Here we will guide you to what to do to keep your curly hair healthy.
Why is hair curly?
The shape of the hair follicle in the scalp will decide the texture and the shape of the hair. If the follicle is round, it will produce straight hair. If it is oval, it will produce curly hair. The flatter the follicle the tighter the curl.
The angle of the hair follicle matters as well. A straight follicle (vertical in the scalp) will produce straight hair while an angled follicle will produce curly. Curly hair also has more sulfur atoms that bind to amino acid compounds. The more you have the curlier the hair.
Good routines for curly hair
It is common that wavy and curly hair is fragile, dry and frizzy. The reason is that the oil (sebum) that the scalp produces has a hard time getting to the ends because of the irregular structure of the hair. That is why it is extra important that your hair care routines are forbearing and that moisture is retained.
1. Wash your hair with a sulphate-free shampoo
Sulphates is an umbrella term for lathering cleansing agents. When they are used on the skin and the hair, they can clean a bit too much and dehydrate by removing well-needed oil. The hair will also become fluffy and frizzy with flyaways. Choose one of our Hair & Body Shampoo or Shampoo, that are all sulphate free.
2. Wash your hair in lukewarm water
Preferably, wash your hair in lukewarm water and rinse in cold water. Hot water will dehydrate the hair. Try to reduce the heat a little at a time, your hair will thank you!
3. Brush or comb your hair when it is wet
Yes, you read that correctly! Curly hair that is fragile and dry can easily break off when brushed. Untangle and brush the hair when it is wet to lessen friction and eliminate frizz. But, only when you have conditioner in your hair! The hairbrush can then untangle the hair more efficiently and you will get all the loose hairs collected in the brush.
4. Switch out your towel for a t-shirt
Try to switch from a towel to a t-shirt when drying your hair. When using a t-shirt, you can easily squeeze out all the water and create a turban to collect all the hair.
After you have washed and detangled the hair, do the following steps:
1. Spray Hair Style Rough into the scalp for more volume. You can also spray in the lengths if you want more defined curls.
2. Spray Hair Detangler in the hair, especially on the lengths. Also, distribute a droplet of Specials For Hair in your hands and then apply it to the lengths.
3. Squeeze in Moulding Cream Energy in the whole hair. Use a pea-sized dollop for shoulder-length, thin hair. Use more if you have thick or longer hair.
4. Squeeze in Hair Gel. Use a pea-sized dollop for shoulder-length, thin hair. Use more if you have thick or longer hair.
5. If you want to blow dry your hair, do so with a diffuser. It will separate and scrunch your curls at the same time as it will dry the hair. The hair will not tangle and will be less harsh on the hair. If you don’t have a diffuser, then you can use your normal hairdryer together with a strainer (!).
6. Apply nourishing products to your hair before you go to sleep. Use for example Hair Thearpy, Hair Mask and/or hair oil. Let it sit in the hair all night. Protect your pillow with a towel.
Hair Care products for curly hair
The best products to use are the ones that are hydrating and nourishing without feeling sticky or weighing down the hair. Avoid oily products if you have fine hair and make sure to use nourishing products of you have thicker, coarse hair.
